BASKETWEAVING - FLAT/SQUARE WEAVING

ABOUT THIS COURSE

Working with many flat strands at the same time this workshop will introduce you to the flat square weave method of basketweaving.  Suitable for absolute beginners with no experience at all.  Today we will make easy-to-make baskets with handles.  You will learn using cardboard but in future you will be able to make your creations colourful and wild or traditional and natural depending on your choice of materials. 

ABOUT THE TUTOR

Jann French was born in England, went to South Africa when she was 12.  Completed an Art Matric at the Johannesburg High School for Art, Ballet & Music; became a stencilling artist and then a film editor, making television and cinema commercials.  Jann's impatience with apartheid, led her back to the UK in 1988.  In London she worked at the BBC making documentaries, series & dramas.

Jann was always involved in creative endeavours in her spare time: painting, drawing, sculpture, screen-printing and pottery.  After a period of illness Jann decided to pursue her love of clay.  In 1998 she graduated from the University of Westminster (Harrow) with a first class pass in Workshop Ceramics, won the RMJM Art for Building Award and then migrated to Australia to be near her family.

On arriving in Australia, Jann worked by day at the Australia Council for the Arts, on the Community Cultural Development Fund and then managed Centrehouse.  A job she thoroughly enjoyed as it made use of all her talents and experiences.  Jann also taught and had a studio in Tempe where she worked on her pottery and sculpture.

Unfortunately the studio wasn't paying its way so she closed it last year and has moved into other arts and crafts which need less space and can even be done on the road.  Which is fun.  Jann still does some ceramics hiring studios when needed.
