Lloyd Rees Youth Art Awards

Dedicated to enhancing and supporting creative achievements throughout Australia, Centrhouse with special support from the Lane Cove Council are custodian of the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Awards.

The Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award is a national bi-annual exhibition and art prize that was set-up during renowned artist, Lloyd Rees's lifetime. It was however officially set-up as an aquisitive prize for the Lane Cove Council in 1998 as recognition to Lloyd Rees's great support of the local art community and the special relationship that he had with Centrehouse from it's inception.

2009 Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Awards

The Awards were opened on Tuesday night, 1st September by Mayor of Lane Cove, Ian Longbottom.

Congratulations to all artists who entered as the judges felt that the standard of the awards was very high this year.

And the winners are....

$5,000 Aquisitive Award - Todd Fuller for 'Watt Art? With Permission

$3,000 Highly Commended Award - Hannah Smith for 'Needle and a Black Eye'.

$800 Commended Prize - Madeleine Cruise for 'Candied Landscape'

Guy Warren, artist and one of this year's judges comments on the awards and winning work.

'Many entrants submitted works of a high standard to this year's competition, especially  the other prizewinners, however the three judges were unanimous in choosing Todd's work as the winner. As one would expect, it does have some limitations but they are the limitations one would expect to find in a student work.  More importantly,  it demonstrates a degree of invention and a willingness to take risks which appealed to all three judges.  By making use of modern technology he positions his art practice firmly in the 21st century, but he is also aware of historical precedents -- firstly the dictum of Swiss artist Paul Klee  ("taking a line for a walk"). Secondly, and  at a more local level,  the work of John Olsen  (who has always acknowledged his debt to that idea of Klee's).  At another level he has obviously looked at and been influenced by the the work of the South African artist William Kentridge.  It is a work of intelligence, sensitivity and, the judges felt, considerable promise. They wish him well for his future.'
