About Centrehouse

Centrehouse is Lane Cove's Community Art and Leisure Centre centrally situated for North Sydney areas.

We are a not-for-profit organisation providing creative and leisure activities for the community through evening and daytime classes for both adults and children. Regular holiday programs for children are also held in school vacations.

Involvement in the local community includes being 'home' to Out of School Care and playgroups, holding regular art and craft exhibitions of the work of teachers and students. Centrehouse  runs the annual Eve Vonwiller Youth Art Awards and organises Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award which is a national biennial event.

Every term we offer a range of popular and new courses. Fro adults these include: ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking and innovative art; languages including French, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin; printmaking; yoga, belly-dancing and pilates; creative writing and others. Children's after school classes include, painting, drawing and craft, and pottery.  Everyone is welcome at Centrehouse whatever their age or ability.

Centrehouse makes its facilities available for the community. This includes art, printmaking and pottery studio hire , kiln firing service. Rental of these facilities may be arranged with the Centre Manager.

Our classes are small and personal, our teachers are highly skilled practicing artists and craftspeople and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.

History

Centrehouse is now NSW's longest running community centre. We have been operating in Lane Cove as a Community Arts/Leisure/Learning Centre since 1972. Centrehouse is managed by a voluntary Management Committee and a paid Administrator. Centrehouse receives financial assistance from Lane Cove Council. Student fee's pay for the teacher's services.

"Centrehouse enables people to come together in a non-competitive atmosphere and gives them the opportunity to gain the courage to express themselves, to gain an appreciation of the creative aspects of art, and realise that everybody can do something that nobody else has ever done. The creative arts enrich our everyday life and give soul to our suburban existence"
Lloyd Rees, Australian Artist, Lane Cove resident and one of Centrehouse's original supporters
